Registry tweaks, tricks & hacks to optimize, enhance and secure Microsoft Windows.

Use Auto-Complete in Word File Dialog Boxes (All Windows)
When you type a file name in the Open, Save, or Save As dialog box, Word may automatically try to complete the file name for you. This tweak can be used to enable or disable this behaviour.

Change the Cache Size for Network Word Documents (All Windows)
When Microsoft Word 2002 reads a file from a network location (UNC), it reads the file into the default 64 kilobyte (KB) page buffer memory. With larger documents this may not be sufficient and cause a delay as changes are made to the document. This tweak allows you to increase the buffer size so that the whole document can be read at once.

Configure the Network Path Preference in Word (All Windows)
This setting allows you to configure Microsoft Word to retain file path information when you work with files on a network server, either as a mapped drive (Z:\Folder_Name\File_Name) or as Universal Naming Convention (\\Share_Name\File_Name).

Reset Microsoft Word Settings and Recent Files (All Windows)
This setting can be used to reset the Word parameters back to the default if you are experiencing problems. For example if you start Word and one of your toolbars or menu bars is missing, or if your personalized settings are not retained.

Enable Wide Text Printing in Microsoft Word (All Windows)
When you print a document that contains extended characters, such as Greek symbols, to certain printers that do not support Unicode characters, the extended characters may be printed as square boxes. This tweak should resolve the problem on most printers.

Disable Multi-User Editing in Microsoft Word (All Windows)
Multi-user editing is a new feature in Word 2002 and Office XP which allows you to open a document that is locked for editing by another user, edit a local copy of the document, and then merge those changes into the original document.

Live Scrolling in Microsoft Word (All Windows)
Normally when you move through a Word document using the scroll bar the page doesn't update until you release the mouse button. With this tweak the document location is updated as you move.
